41: works in progress

I have SO MANY projects on the go right now, I’ve got to get focussed on just one or two so I can start completing them.  Let me know you some of the stuff I have been working on – I’d love some feedback!

Motherhood

First, I took another visit to the dollar store, and picked up some scrapbooking paper and an art canvas.  I recently saw some nursery/kids art using the two, but I can’t find it anywhere.  Anyone know what I’m talking about?

In the mean time, I’m using some of the paper as matting for the framed photographs I’m putting up on her walls.

Based on what I’ve heard about infant eye development, I think I’ll print off black and white photos for the frames, at least for the first few months.  Once her eyes are seeing more colours and relying less on contrast, I’ll sub in more colourful photos to keep her entertained.  I like how some of the paper framed, so I may decide to use these frames just for ‘art’ and get some more to place elsewhere in the room for photos; we’ll see once I’m closer to finishing the project!   I *think* these frames will go vertically on the wall above her dresser – on the right hand side as the left side will be her change table.

I can’t remember if I mentioned it before, but I also found (yet) another chair to use as a nursing chair in her room.  Don’t get the wrong idea; I still like the IKEA chair I found.  In fact I love it so much I moved it to the living room so that I could use it more often!

In it’s place is now this Dutailier rocker/glider that my mom and I found at the local ReUse Centre when we were dropping off some items (chairs actually) for donation.  It was only $48, and from what I’ve seen online, they retail for over $300!

Unfortunately, the fabric isn’t in the best condition, particularly on the seat.  It’s lighter in appearance due to the extra wear it gets, and its got some staining and a tear.  The other side is even worse! lol.

The options that are attainable and affordable (replacement cushions are $149!!) are recovering the cushions, creating a slipcover, or simply strategically placing items to cover the unpleasantness. lol.

Here’s the chair with a blanket thrown over the bad area:

And here’s the chair with some fabric pinned on it (in one long piece, it’s not really looking like it would slip covered or recovered):

To put it in perspective, here is baby girl’s bedding.  It has brown in the pattern and as well has a brown trim around the edge between the red and green (hard to see):

So what do you think?  What would you do to the chair to make it ‘fit’ with the room and make it pretty??  I also have some drop cloth fabric lying around that I could use to recover it…

Today I also worked on one of my 10 in 10 projects and went to our storage to sort through my non-maternity clothing.  As much as it seems (most days) like it is taking forever to get to the end of this pregnancy (5 weeks left, 2 to full term, yikes!) it’s actually coming quite quickly to the time that I will need to pull my normal clothing back out.    I figured it would make it easier to have some of the work already done and go through what I’ve got to see if it’s actually worth it to put it back in my closet.

Here are the 3 bags I could find in the storage.  I’m pretty sure there’s a tote in there as well that is filled with clothes (including some pants I promised to a friend who worked her butt off and lost over 20 pounds…sorry friend!), but it’s buried in the back and as you can see, there’s too much for this pregnant lady to shift around easily.

Anyways, I managed to reduce 3 bags to 2.  Not bad.  The other bag (on the right) I’ll take to Goodwill tomorrow, and maybe do some shopping for some house wares and nice items to wear once the baby’s here!

After I was done at the storage unit, I took a cruise by the park, and took some photos by the water.  After a week of rain, humidity, and hot weather, today it only reached about 17 degrees and it was bright and rain free.

waterfront 1 waterfront 2 waterfront 3I’d guess the water is only about 10 degrees right now.  I hope the wind surfers are wearing wet suits!

I’m off for the next 5 days, so I’m hoping to get LOTS done around the house and enjoy some time celebrating the birthday of my favourite place on earth. :)

Maybe for the chair you could add some applique's ironed on that would match the bedding? Or a pretty pillow that matches the bedding to add a pop of color. I'm pretty clueless though with all things reupholstery.
